This video lesson is part of a series introducing a simple model called the “epidemiological triangle” which illustrates the relationships between three elements that influence the likelihood of an infectious disease outbreak or epidemic. Using simple conceptual frameworks allow us to consider more complicated concepts by asking the right questions. Here we use the epidemiological triangle to explore how Lyme disease spreads and how we can prevent it. We break down the three parts of the triangle: the agent (the bacteria and how it spreads), the host (humans, animals, and ticks involved in transmission), and the environment (natural and human-made factors that affect the disease).

We also discuss interventions—ways to stop the disease from spreading, such as checking for ticks after being outdoors, wearing protective clothing, and reducing human exposure to tick habitats. By the end of this video, you’ll understand how public health strategies can help prevent Lyme disease!
