Housing, urban, and community design are important factors in the social determinants of health. At the [Graduate School of Design](http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/) (GSD) at Harvard University, architecture, design, and urban planning students are regularly engaged in a broad range of projects relevant to global health and sustainable development, such as designing sanitation or energy generating facilities for resource-poor settings, evaluating social media in urban networks, and developing “green” communities. The [Health topic portal](http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/topic/health/) at the GSD website also showcases additional ways that design and health are related.

This [article](https://www.harvarddesignmagazine.org/articles/designing-for-endless-fire-how-architects-city-planners-and-public-health-experts-are-rethinking-fire-resilience-in-los-angeles/) in Harvard Design Magazine gathers a panel of experts in architecture, planning, wildfire, and public health to discuss designing for wildfires after the 2025 fire in Los Angeles. The article provides an overview of what caused the fire to grow so large as well as how LA can be rebuilt for fire resilience and public health.

### Featured Center 

 

The [Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities](https://harvardcgbc.org/) aims to encourage the creation of sustainable buildings and cities through research in four dimensions: modeling, application, economics, and macro planning and implementation. The Center aims to spark change not just through design but also through changing the behavior of firms, building residents, and local governments to transform building development at urban scales.
