The Healthy People 2030 framework was specifically designed as a communication tool to help states and policymakers explain to stakeholders and citizens how factors beyond healthcare—like where you live, work, go to school, and your economic status—significantly impact health.

This framework differs from other frameworks in how it groups and classifies the social determinants, but the overall purpose is to highlight the broader social, economic, and environmental conditions that influence population health. While this is one example, other frameworks categorize the same factors differently. When evaluating any social determinants framework, ask: Who developed it? Why? When? What was its purpose?
