# Book Talk on Health and Human Rights by Senior Scholar Alicia Ely Yamin

February 03, 2020

Even in a globalized world, where trade is ubiquitous, migration is constant, and material resources are ever-abundant, advances toward equity both within and between nations have been limited. How have human rights contributed to this dilemma, and what role will it need to play to remedy everyday injustices? On February 7th, GHELI’s Senior Scholar in Residence and leader of the Global Health and Rights Project, Alicia Ely Yamin, will participate in a panel about her newly published book, [*When Misfortune Becomes Injustice*](https://www.sup.org/books/law/when-misfortune-becomes-injustice). Drawing upon her experience as an academic, lawyer, and advocate, she will discuss the progress and challenges in practicing human rights to advance health and social equality over recent decades, with special considerations for women’s health and rights.

Yamin has been at the forefront of decades of research, activism, and policymaking, with her work inspiring collective action in communities across the globe and deliberation around decision-making tables at the United Nations. Her multidisciplinary perspective draws from a legion of fields and spaces, including law, public health, grassroots organizing, and multilateral institutions. Yamin will be joined by expert panelists—including GHELI Faculty Director, Professor Sue J. Goldie—to unpack the critical junctures facing health and human rights moving forward. The event is free and open to the public.

This talk is sponsored by the [Harvard Law School Library](https://hls.harvard.edu/library/) and the [Global Health and Rights Project](https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/research/global-health-rights-project) (GHRP), a collaboration between the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School and the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator (GHELI) at Harvard University.
