For this year’s World Health Day, held annually on April 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) is celebrating its 75th anniversary—and taking stock of decades of critical work toward improving global health for all. “Health For All,” this year’s World Health Day focus, emphasizes the fundamental belief that every person has the right to good health and access to quality health services—without financial hardship. Globally, 30 percent of the world’s population does not have access to essential health services, illuminating the need for universal health coverage (UHC) that ensures access to quality care, financial protection for communities, and the ability to withstand public health crises and emergencies.

The WHO urges countries to invest in and envision a world that ensures Health for All by strengthening health systems and investing in a skilled public health workforce. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has set back countries’ progress toward achieving health for all and global development goals, investing in UHC remains critical to establishing a safe, healthy, prosperous future to come.
