While COVID-19 has disrupted classrooms and events globally, Harvard University remains committed to continue disseminating knowledge all over the world. On March 27th, 2020, GHELI will be co-sponsoring a livestream event, [“Debt, Dignity, and Health Care: Guaranteeing Health Rights and Universal Health Coverage”](https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/events/details/debt-dignity-and-health-care), with the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School as a part of their shared Global Health and Rights

Skyrocketing medical bills disproportionately affect the world’s most vulnerable people, many of whom are detained in hospitals due to unpaid medical bills—a violation of national and international law. Instead of sidelining populations who are already at-risk of financial and medical fallout, it is imperative to look at the system which fosters these conditions. Without universal health care, human rights remain in peril, and people in poor health bear the brunt of failed policies, priority-setting, and legal oversight, especially in the U.S.

Leading scholars in the field of health and human rights will be addressing medical debt in the American health care system, including GHELI’s Senior Scholar in Residence Alicia Ely Yamin.
