# Supporting Malaria Control Implementation

April 24, 2023

According to the [2022 *World Malaria Report*](https://www.who.int/teams/global-malaria-programme/reports/world-malaria-report-2022), malaria infected 247 million people and killed 619,000 in 2021. Of those, 95 percent of cases and 96 percent of deaths occurred in the WHO African Region. To bring attention the continued impact of malaria and drive global action to end this deadly disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) commemorates [World Malaria Day](https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-malaria-day/2023) on April 25. This year’s theme is “Time to Deliver Zero Malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement.”

First, “Invest” brings attention to the widening gap between the funding invested in malaria control and the amount needed. World Malaria Day calls on leaders to better target available funding and prioritize the most vulnerable, who are least able to access services.

Second, “Innovate” celebrates progress in the interventions that reduce the global burden of malaria. Innovations in vector control, diagnostic testing, and treatment have been key to the global decline of malaria. Continued investment in new innovations, such as malaria vaccines, will be crucial to achieving zero malaria.

Finally, “Implement” recognizes how compounding challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, humanitarian crises, and restricted funding have limited countries’ ability to expand service access to those who most need it. To help reach those vulnerable populations, WHO is supporting countries implementing malaria programs by publishing new [guidance](https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-malaria-day/2023/implement) that is more transparent, accessible, and flexible.
