Blood plays an important role in human health and the transmission of disease. The image depicts the word “Blood” connected by a sprawling network of veins. For the student, it had a double meaning: it represents the importance of blood in global health while also depicting blood and veins as a metaphor for social network.

Blood can have a lot to do with what your health is like. There are many diseases which can be transmitted from person to person through blood. But for this student, it wasn’t just a symbol of how understanding the human body or understanding blood is important to global health; it was also about how we’re all interconnected.
This student was very motivated to say global health is a lot about our social interconnection, our heritage, our relationships. It’s how we’re connected to each other that matters. If you don’t see everyone as connected to one another, you will never be able to make progress in global health.
