Hidden Hunger: Fighting Child Malnutrition in the U.S.
A microsite and podcast explain about hidden hunger in U.S. children and what we can do to fight hidden hunger.
In the United States and many other nations around the world, societies are struggling with the double burden of malnutrition: the combination of undernutrition with overweight and obesity. Hidden hunger refers to malnutrition due to insufficient quantities of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals essential for a healthy development. Hidden hunger may not be able to be identified through appearances, but it is especially important to address in children because micronutrient deficiency can impact a child’s physical, mental, and social development. This microsite and accompanying podcast provide an overview on what hidden hunger is, its drivers and effects, and what can be done to fight it.

My final project is a microsite with an embedded podcast. I wanted this project to be widely accessible, appealing, and digestible to the general public for the purpose of educating and providing resources. Particularly during COVID-19, I found importance in spreading awareness about this global issue that is magnified due to these current finance and resource-limited times. While broad, my intended audience is students, families, and educators all around the U.S. This is because I believe child hidden hunger is an issue little known by yet largely impactful to and improvable by many. Equipped with greater knowledge about the avenues through which hidden hunger operates and the interventions we can influence, anyone can help alleviate this epidemic.
