Applications Open for Global Studies Workshop
Across the globe, the relationship between religion and nation-states is complex and dynamic. Religious nationalism, an often understudied aspect of this relationship, is key to understanding policies, personal and community impacts, and outcomes globally. In some countries, religious nationalism is an explicit guiding force behind governance; in others, it is a less visible or minority voice that nonetheless deserves attention. Its prevalence in the 21st century reveals the limits of conventional ideas about modernity and the future, and it invites us to investigate the reasons behind its continuing–and in some cases growing–influence.
To explore these subjects in greater depth, Global Studies Outreach Committee—a collaboration including the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator—will host a four-day teacher workshop, “Religious Nationalism in a Global Context.” The workshop will be held on-site at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, from July 31 to August 3, 2023. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2023.
The summer workshop invites educator participants to form learning communities that will investigate global challenges and opportunities and consider how to communicate them effectively to their students. The workshop is geared toward middle school, high school, and community college educators, but it is open to educators of all subjects. The workshop will feature presentations by scholars, experts, policy-makers, and practitioners at the forefront of shaping global conversation. Participants will explore pedagogy and skill-building techniques they can bring back to their classrooms.
This workshop is organized by the Global Studies Outreach Committee, a consortium of centers at Harvard University, including the Davis Center, the Asia Center, the Center for African Studies, and the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator. Additional program support is provided by North Shore Community College and Religion and Public Life at Harvard Divinity School.
