Applications Open for Summer Teacher Workshop

Fake news. Alternative facts. Propaganda. Conspiracy theories. Today’s landscape of lies and half-truths is rich and overwhelming, permeating headlines and our social feeds. Mis- and disinformation are relatively new labels for an ongoing and increasingly perfidious problem that is driving wedges between people and within communities and exacerbating partisanship. Globally, bad actors use disinformation to deepen tensions at home and abroad and to achieve their preferred domestic outcomes. The global COVID-19 pandemic has furthered the mis/disinformation crisis, with disparate impacts on international communities.

At this summer’s annual Global Studies Outreach workshop, middle school, high school, and community college educators will dive into this complex topic. The workshop will feature presentations by scholars, experts, policymakers, and practitioners who study the multiple dimensions of gender and its impact; explore pedagogy and skill-building techniques for curriculum development; and introduce relevant classroom resources,

This workshop will take place July 26 to August 6, 2021 through 6-8 synchronous afternoon sessions over the two-week period, with suggested pre-work and the ability to connect with other participating educators asynchronously online.

The Global Studies Outreach at Harvard’s summer workshop is co-sponsored by the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator, Asia Center, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Center for African Studies, the Religious Literacy Project at Harvard Divinity School, and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, all of Harvard University.

The deadline to apply for this opportunity is May 7, 2021; instructions are available at the Global Studies Outreach at Harvard website. For additional questions about the workshop or the application please email Cris Martin at clmartin@fas.harvard.edu.
