Dr. Sue J. Goldie, GHELI Faculty Director and the Roger Irving Lee Professor of Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, has been named the 2020 recipient of the Roger L. Nichols Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award will be announced during the Harvard Chan School’s virtual commencement on Thursday, May 28.

The award is intended to enhance the quality of education in public health by honoring outstanding achievement in teaching at the school, and acknowledges excellence in classroom instruction, capacity to inspire students and dedication to teaching. The selection was based on the stellar reviews of teaching by students in course evaluations over many years, and Dr. Goldie’s contributions to teaching and learning at the Harvard Chan School and across the University.

Goldie’s commitment to novel, interdisciplinary education has been exemplified in her approach to meaningful remote learning experiences during this unprecedented time of COVID-19. In a recent interview with the Harvard Gazette, Goldie shared how she shifted her flagship General Education course at Harvard College, World Health: Challenges and Opportunities, to demonstrate how educators can integrate and contextualize such an urgent global crisis into their learning goals. According to Professor Goldie, the most effective learning environment is one which leverages complex issues at the forefront of global health and allows students to personally connect their learning experience to their community.

Beyond her contributions to teaching and learning, Goldie is renowned for her scholarship in decision science and commitment to policy translation. In addition to the Incubator, Goldie also serves as Director of the Center for Health Decision Science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Congratulations, Professor Goldie!
