Incubator Partners With School of Public Health
The Incubator partnered with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to conduct teaching workshops for teaching fellows in an innovative new course on the Fundamental Concepts of Global Health (FCPH). FCHP was piloted as a four-day mini course, held during the Chan School’s orientation week, that equipped incoming students with a flexible conceptual framework for critically thinking about population health globally – meaning both at home and abroad—that they can apply in the years ahead, both during their time at the School and throughout their careers.
The FCPH course utilized visual and graphical techniques to foster creative and cross-disciplinary understanding of health conditions, determinants, and responses. In order to prepare the teaching fellows (TFs) tasked with facilitating the FCPH breakout sessions, the Incubator hosted the TFs for a day-long training workshop on effective teaching in global health. Incubator director Sue J. Goldie, who co-taught the FCPH course, mapped out the educational ecosystem describing the landscape in which teaching and learning occurs and described how that landscape has changed over time. Participants were introduced to a set of tools to facilitate teaching, including visual literacy, drawing, and the creation of conceptual frameworks. Students then applied these tools in a “mind-mapping” exercise in which each participant created a visual introduction to him/herself. Finally, participants explored teacher-learner interactions that they might encounter in the classroom.
