Incubator Welcomes Back Interns Tyler Fox and Nico Yamin
The Incubator welcomes back interns Tyler Fox and Nico Yamin, two instrumental members in GHELI’s efforts to craft and curate novel resources for teaching and learning. This is Tyler’s fourth summer at the Incubator, and Nico’s second summer.
In addition to supporting curation resources for GHELI’s online repository, Tyler is working closely with the Incubator’s teaching and learning team to develop teaching tools on maternal health care. More specifically, the resource pack and lesson plan in progress focuses on nurses, midwives, and other health workers who play important roles in combatting maternal mortality.
“Believe it or not, but midwifery has a long history in the United States,” says Tyler, rising senior at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. “Since studies show that women with continuous support tend to have better health outcomes, I believe midwives and doulas can fill this gap in the U.S. I believe midwives can help address some of the racial disparities in maternal mortality in the U.S., where non-Hispanic black women are almost three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts.”
Tyler’s internship builds ongoing thesis research on maternal health care: He will be traveling to Zambia later this summer to conduct ethnographic research about nurses and midwives across the country’s diverse health care settings. Outside of his endeavors with the Incubator, Tyler is preparing for his next season of rowing for UNC Men’s Crew.
Nico, a rising sophomore at Union College, will be supporting the Incubator’s Learning Studios team, working on several digital- and visual-based projects. In addition to creating accessible guides on how to use these digital and visual programs, Nico will be working with the Incubator’s teaching and learning team to refresh a series of briefs that explore interdisciplinary global health topics.
“I always start the work week with a sense of excitement,” says Nico. “At the Incubator, I am often tasked with unique, interesting projects that not only lead me to develop my own abilities in the working world, but also help me see how I can actively make the world a better, brighter place with the skills I have.”
While Nico has not yet declared his major, he is interested in understanding ways that social media can lead to transformative social change. During his free time, Nico manages different social media pages for a variety of brands.
