On Our Radar: Eradicating Polio through Art

September 20, 2017
Afghanistan is one of three countries where polio is still endemic—but what if art could help eradicate the disease? Supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Afghan NGO Art Lords will be painting 250 giant murals portraying men and women vaccinating children against polio. Founded in 2015, Art Lords is dedicated to creating spaces in Afghanistan where social issues can be visually expressed and discussed in the streets. The large-scale murals typically require two days to complete, starting at night with tracing the image before returning the next day to add color. Children in the neighborhood regularly join in to help with the painting.
