Special Resource Collection Celebrates Universal Health Coverage Day

December 18, 2017

Health is a human right. Despite this, many across the world are unable to realize their right to access effective, quality health services without suffering financial hardship. Achieving this goal of universal health coverage requires strengthening health systems and providing integrated health services that are people-centered. To join the global celebration of Universal Health Coverage Day, the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator has curated a special resource collection on universal health coverage, which pulls together key reports, case studies, and data about realizing the vision of “health for all.”

While progress has been made in parts of the world, the situation still remains stark: According to the newly released global monitoring report from the World Health Organization and World Bank Group, more than half of the world’s 7.3 billion people still do not receive all the essential health services they need. Furthermore, about 100 million people fall into extreme poverty due to health expenditures.

The multidisciplinary materials in this resource collection are suitable for students, policymakers, and educators, looking to integrate high-quality information into their classrooms, assignments, and research. The resources—each accompanied by brief annotations—outline the history of the campaign for universal health coverage, as well as clarify the movement’s intersections with human rights law, essential medicines, health financing, and health systems strengthening.
