Spurring the Conversation on Gender Equality in Higher Education

December 19, 2018

Understanding the difference between sex and gender, and what so-called “gender ideology” and gender stereotypes could not be more critical. Current trends in legal cases and in politics underscore the importance of  this issue: Recently, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban effectively banned gender studies. Simultaneously, there has been unprecedented backlash against sexual and reproductive health and rights in many countries— in Latin America, parts of the United States, and elsewhere around the world.

At the same time, the global development agenda and some progressive countries are increasingly recognizing the importance of gender equality in all its dimensions to development. These are issues that go beyond law schools or judiciaries, but should be made accessible to students and other members of the public who want to understand the terms and what's at stake.

GHELI is proud to have developed this video in collaboration with PROMSEX, a leading Peruvian reproductive rights organization, and a founding sponsor of the Regional Latin American Congress on Reproductive Rights in Latin America. In this video, human rights lawyer Alicia Ely Yamin—the Incubator’s Senior Scholar in Residence—discusses gender stereotypes and reframing the struggles for sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The video will be partially translated and partially subtitled in Spanish, and we will also include useful teaching materials with the video. The second part video will address other forms of stereotypes and reproductive rights.
