Supporting Interdisciplinary Student Teaching

One of the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator’s (GHELI) many collaborations is with the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning. Every fall, the Bok Center facilitates a Fall Teaching Conference, which provides training in the fundamentals, workshops, roundtables, and practice teaching sessions for PhD student teachers across disciplines. The Teaching Conference this year was held from August 18-25 and included both in-person and virtual sessions for new and experienced Teaching Fellows (TFs).

GHELI’s Bok Pedagogy Fellow, Elizabeth Hentschel, collaborated with her fellow student educators to facilitate practice teaching sessions and roundtable discussions. In her role, Elizabeth shares insights across Bok Center and GHELI to foster deeper global health pedagogy.

During the practice teaching sessions, TFs delivered short, five-minute lessons on an introductory concept in their field. Pedagogy Fellows then facilitated a discussion about the lesson, providing feedback on the session and helping the TF to improve their pedagogical approaches in the future.

“It’s amazing how despite differences in subject-matter expertise, the same techniques can really be employed to encourage student participation, even in a five-minute practice lecture,” shared Elizabeth.

Roundtable discussions allowed Pedagogy Fellows to discuss specifics of teaching in a given discipline with TFs and help TFs to consider the many aspects of their role. Bok Center staff led a variety of related workshops, focused on how students learn, interdisciplinary teaching, and active learning in STEM classrooms.
