Applications Now Open for Summer Teacher Workshop, “Cities and Our Urbanizing World”

February 21, 2017

This summer from Monday, July 31 to Thursday, August 3, 2017 the Incubator will co-sponsor the teacher workshop, “Cities and Our Urbanizing World.” For the first time in human history, our world is becoming predominantly urban. By 2050 it is estimated that two-thirds of the world’s population will live in urban communities. This migration from the rural to the urban presents challenges and opportunities that require the engagement of individuals, communities, organizations, businesses, and governments—at the local, national, and multinational levels.

During the summer workshop, offered by Global Studies Outreach at Harvard, educator participants will form learning communities that will investigate and make sense of these challenges and opportunities and consider how to communicate them effectively to their students. The workshop is geared toward middle school, high school, and community college educators in the humanities and social sciences, but is open to educators in all subjects. The workshop will feature presentations by scholars, experts, policy-makers, and practitioners who study urbanization and its impact; explore pedagogy and skill-building techniques to help educators and students better understand urbanization as a global phenomenon; and provide an introduction to relevant classroom resources, often modeled on activities and pedagogies developed by Project Zero, a research group based at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The workshop costs $50 and is held on-site at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Educators interested in participating should apply through the workshop’s online application page; instructions are available at the Global Studies Outreach at Harvard website. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 31, 2017. For additional questions about the workshop or the application please email: globalstudiesoutreach@harvard.edu.

With the Incubator, the Global Studies Outreach at Harvard’s summer workshop is sponsored by the Asia Center, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Center for African Studies, David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, and developed in collaboration with Project Zero, all of Harvard University.
