Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice

The Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School (CHHIRJ), launched in 2005, seeks to honor and continue the unfinished work of Charles Hamilton Houston. As Vice Dean of Howard Law School, Houston developed a multi-year strategy that ultimately culminated in the unanimous 1954 Supreme Court Decision, Brown v. Board of Education, ending the discriminatory “separate but equal” doctrine present in schools during segregation. CHHIRJ works to address the contemporary challenges of an ethnically and racially diverse society, ensuring that all people enjoy equal access to the opportunities, responsibilities, and privileges of membership in the United States. CHHIRJ publishes news stories, hosts events, and houses a repository of resources related to racial and social justice in the U.S. – including those focusing on public health, education, and housing
