Alicia Ely Yamin.

We are thrilled to announce that Alicia Ely Yamin, GHELI’s Senior Scholar in Residence, will add on another role in her breadth of expertise, serving as the Senior Advisor on Human Rights at Partners in Health (PIH). PIH is a nonprofit organization focusing on building capacity and strengthening health systems around the world by improving access to care. From Mexico to Sierra Leone, experts include health professionals, scholars, and activists, and Yamin is now joining their ranks.

Yamin is an expert legal scholar, a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, an Adjunct Lecturer at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and has been a Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center. She has served as a Commissioner for the Lancet-Georgetown/O’Neill Institute Commission on Global Health and the Law and has been a member of advisory groups for the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the United Nations. Her career has not only been rooted in academia, but also in activism—she has lived and worked in Latin America and East Africa for half of her professional life, working in conjunction with local advocacy organizations. Her latest book, When Misfortune Becomes Injustice: Evolving Human Rights Struggles for Health and Social Equality focuses on the evolution of human rights struggles—spotlighting how far we’ve come, but how many more steps we still have to take to ensure human equity.
