Health Equity, Behind the Scenes

January 8, 2018

What does health equity look like, sound like, or feel like? Last year, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) called on artists across the country to illustrate how their communities view and prioritize health. The diverse answers to NAM’s call are now curated in a permanent digital gallery, which features work by Smita Bhattacharya, the Incubator’s Artist-in-Residence in August 2017.

The piece, entitled Dil (“heart”), explores heart disease in the South Asian community, which remains an understudied health disparity in the United States. Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death globally, accounting for thirty percent of all deaths. South Asians, however, make up 60 percent of the heart disease patient population.
