Training for Effective and Sustainable Health Care Financing

In December 2021, the Harvard China Health Partnership (HCHP) convened more than 40 national and provincial-level government policymakers from China’s National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA). More than 150 NHSA officials also joined virtually for the multi-day training, which was focused on encouraging policymakers to “consider new approaches to health system reform efforts, introduce global experience as an invaluable source of ideas, and facilitate dialogue between officials from different parts of the country.”

This year’s course included experts from Asia, Europe, and North America, including GHELI’s Senior Faculty Scholar, Professor William C. Hsiao, PhD, FSA. Hsiao is the K.T. Li Research Professor of Economics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he has spent over forty years conducting health financing studies, including on single payer systems. Hsiao is also known for the Control Knobs model, an analytical model for national health systems that is taught and used worldwide. Eight nations commissioned Professor Hsiao and his team to design major reforms of their national health systems.
