Women’s Voices Gallery

GHELI partnered with Professor Jessica Cohen and Teaching Fellow Marema Gaye to co-design the Women’s Voices Gallery, the capstone of the first section of GHHP20, “Maternal and Reproductive Health and Health Policy: What Do We Know? How Do We Know It? What Are We Doing About It?” The assignment treated women’s lived experiences as evidence. Each student chose a first-person narrative from a bank of video reflections and digital stories, then paired it with academic research to build a poster proposing policy responses. Topics included informed consent, hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, postpartum care, and culturally competent care for immigrant and Indigenous communities.

Student presenting project.

GHELI guided students in using its “studio in a box” approach, with smartphones and tripods, to help students practice one to two-minute elevator pitches during their section. On the day of the event, GHELI’s space became a simulated academic poster session. Students presented in rotating groups to classmates, alumni, family, and GHELI staff, and took questions from peers and from Faculty Director Sue J. Goldie. The pilot showed how a shared space and simple media tools can turn a course assignment into an interdisciplinary public dialogue. Selected posters, on Indigenous maternal morbidity and on midwives in the U.S., now appear in GHELI’s online student gallery as educational public goods.
